EVER BEEN IN A SITUATION where you did not feel brave at all? Where you felt you were going to be sick? Where there was no way out of the situation?

I have. But it had nothing to do with cancer.

A few years ago my husband and I went to Walt Disney World with our friends Bob and Cindy, both of whom are much more adventurous daredevils than I am. Because I am prone to severe motion sickness, before the trip I checked out all the “thrill” rides online to see which, if any, I was willing to try. At the top of my “no” list was the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.

When we came to that ride tucked in the corner of Hollywood Studios, Bob was the only one who wanted to go. When he got off, he was laughing uncontrollably and said the ride wasn’t jarring at all. I was not convinced, but my husband and Cindy were, and because there was no line, they quickly headed into the abandoned hotel tower.

When the three of them came back laughing, my dear, sweet husband, who knows I get sick just turning around in the front seat of the car, assured me that the ride wasn’t bad at all and I would feel just fine.

So I went on the ride—a series of accelerated drops as the elevator randomly hurtled up and down in the dark. No passenger on that ride has ever prayed harder or louder than I did. My husband is fortunate I don’t believe in divorce.
